WHAT IS IT?
Its Wonder Woman, the feature-length animated movie based on... Wonder Woman! The film was the fourth animated film in DC/Warner Bros' Animated Original Movies line and was produced by Bruce Timm. The film starred Keri Russell as Princess Diana of Themyscira (aka Wonder Woman), Nathan Fillion as love interest Steve Trevor and Alfred Molina as chief bad guy Ares.
Wonder Woman was an origin story loosely based on George Perez's God's & Mortals storyline and followed Diana as she travelled from Paradise Island to Washington DC. Along the way Diana becomes Wonder Woman, she thwarts Ares' evil scheme of destroying Paradise Island and even has time for a little romance with Steve Trevor. The movie contained a number of fan-pleasing moments - including the presence of Diana's invisible plane - and was well received by critics.
WHAT WAS GOOD?
Unlike most superhero tales, Wonder Woman was an origin story that didn't rely too heavily on having the main character appear in her super heroine costume. Instead the story focused on establishing Diana as a person, as well as establishing the world that she inhabitated - which included gods, monsters and Amazons! Yep, Wonder Woman was a mythological epic (of sorts) which was high on swords and sandles and low on costumed super villains and surprisingly this approach worked! Keri Russell was perfectly cast as Wonder Woman, whilst Nathan Fillion provided ample support as Steve Trevor.
An additional highlight included the opening sequence which perfectly demonstrated why Diana's mother - Hippolyta - was Queen of the Amazons. The scene was a fantastic showcase of what it takes to be an Amazon and featured a rip-roaring battle complete with a surprising decapitation. Brutal, yet brilliantly executed.
