BUT WHAT DID HAPPEN?
Well Durance did play Wonder Woman!
Erm... sort of.
The former Smallville actress technically played Annie Billson; a woman who believed she was Wonder Woman on Kelley's TV series Harry's Law. The character was psychologically disturbed and actually thought that she was the costumed super heroine. She then got into a spot of trouble when she started acting as a vigilante and was soon in need of some help herself!
HMMM... SO DURANCE WASN'T REALLY WONDER WOMAN THEN!?
Well, no. However she did get as close to the role as possible given the character's spectacular failure under Kelley's watch.
Kelley had previously attempted to get Wonder Woman back on to TV screens with another Smallville actress in the shape of Adrianne Palicki. The show was hyped to the max before any film made it into the can, however early publicity shots of Palicki in costume failed to win over the fans. The show did make it to the pilot stage, but that soon fell flat when every network passed on it. What had been a potentially high profile show became a notorious flop!
The costume did survive however and became the outfit worn by Durance on Kelley's other show.
Speaking about appearing as the star spangled super heroine on a non-Wonder Woman show, Durance said: "You get to have a little bit of freedom and you're not judged quite so harshly.
"The way that I was able to work with the character (of) Wonder Woman in this is through the eyes of a woman who desperately needed a strong female archetype to look up to and this was her alter ego."
BUT WHAT IF?
If Durance had really played Wonder Woman she would have been brilliant!
Short of Lucy Lawless in the role, the Wonder Woman legacy would have been in safe hands with Durance wearing the gold braclets and hot pants.
But alas it just wasn't to be.
SO WAS THIS DURANCE'S ONLY BRUSH WITH PLAYING WONDY?
More or less. Whilst playing Lois Lane on Smallville the actress did get to dress up in a Xena/Wonder Woman-style costume, but it was just an in-joke for fans. As you can see from the image (right) Durance didn't look half as good in that costume as she did on Harry's Law, so maybe she should have been cast as Wonder Woman on Kelley's series?!
Well, it's just a thought.
SO, WAS IT A BAD THING THAT DURANCE WASN'T CAST AS WONDER WOMAN?
Hell yeah! Durance was one of the best Lois Lane's on TV (yes, even up there with Teri Hatcher's Lois Lane from Lois & Clark), so she could have easily played the Amazing Amazon!
