If comics have taught us anything (and we here at The Comics Code believe they have) it’s that old people often speak wise words. Say what you want about them, but when it comes to the crunch and you need sage words of wisdom, an OAP should always be your first port of call. We know this to be true thanks to a key piece of advice that has become one of the all time classic rules by which a certain arachnid superhero has stuck to. The Superhero is of course Spider-man and the person who gave him these words was one Benjamin Parker... or ‘Uncle Ben’ as you might know him better. With the phrase ‘with great power there must also come – great responsibility’, Uncle Ben passed to his nephew the most important collection of words he could ever pass to anyone. OK, technically it wasn’t Ben that said those words to Spidey (way back in Amazing Fantasy #15 when they were first used), but it’s Ben that they’ve always been attributed to.
It was a simple statement, but one that Spidey took to heart and throughout all the ups and downs during his crime-fighting career it was these words that kept him battling on, to help those that couldn’t help themselves. Spidey might have been super, but he wouldn’t have been half the hero without his Uncle Ben... and that’s why he’s a Pulp Idol!
