For those who haven't been paying attention then bloody hell what the heck have you been watching? Hawkeye cameoed in Thor as did the Tessaract (aka the Cosmic Cube), Nick Fury cropped up in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America, the super soldier serum got name checked countless times in the Incredible Hulk and Thor's hammer and a prototype of Captain America's shield appeared in Iron Man 2.
Of course there were other references on the build up to the Avengers, but jeez that's not what I'm here to talk about so quit buggin' me, will ya?! Instead the subject of this Top 5 are the those post-Avenger references that work towards the larger Marvel Movie Universe. You know, those post-Avenger references that you either forgot about or missed altogether! An Avengers Assemble spoiler is ahead... you have been warned.
Long before Marvel Comics became Marvel Comics the company was known as Timely. However this all changed when in 1939 Marvel Comics #1 was published and pretty much the rest was history. That iconic issue featured the original Human Torch (no relation to the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four) who was an android that burst into flames when he was exposed to air. The android was created by Dr. Phineas Horton, had a connection to Avengers character the Vision and during a blink and you'll miss it shot in Captain America, that same android made a brief appearance! Will he return and will this mean more Marvel movies set during the 30s/40s?
Although the Abomination was the big villain in The Incredible Hulk, for those in the know a second villain was introduced in the film, setting up an interesting character for a potential sequel. That character was Samuel Sterns, a biologist who was more than a little interested in Banner's gamma-infected blood. Stern may have only appeared briefly in the movie, but it was long enough for him to begin the first stages of becoming the villainous Leader!
Remember that scene in Captain America when Cap's best bud Bucky Barnes fell from a moving train to his death? Well prepare yourself for a shock.... Bucky didn't die! OK, so this has yet to be confirmed, but in the Marvel Universe Bucky survived death to become the Winter Soldier and so if you don't think that this is going to happen in the Marvel Movie Universe then you should leave now.
Go on, stop reading and go do something else.
However if you're still with me, it seems a safe bet that Bucky will return in a future Cap movie/spin-off. Oh and expect to see villains the Red Skull and Arnim Zola at some point too!
Another blink and you missed it moment but for eagle-eyed audiences a quick look around Odin's trophy room in Thor led to a few geek-out moments.
Chief amongst these was the Infinity Gauntlet an all-powerful glove that could do some serious damage to our favourite heroes!
If you've seen the post-credit scene in Avengers Assemble - which features Thanos - then you'll know that it's a pretty safe bet that we'll see more of this glove in future movies.
You know there was a time when watching a movie involved paying attention to what the central characters were up to. Nowadays you need a degree in 'background watching' to pick up on all the hints and clues to what's going on in the sequels. Well if you happen to have one of those degrees then you may have spotted a few hints to other areas of the Marvel Universe that we've yet to see.
During a scene in Iron Man 2 when Tony Stark is hob nobbing it with S.H.I.E.L.D head honcho Nick Fury, a map placed conveniently in the background pin points a number of locations that have already appeared in the Marvel Movie Universe. These locations include the site where Thor's hammer was found and the area where the Hulk's smackdown with Abomination took place. However additional locations seem to suggest that trouble will soon be brewing in Atlantis - home of Prince Namor - and Wakanda - the African home of Black Panther!
