For those not in the know, Days of Future Past is a classic X-Men tale which saw Kitty Pryde return to the present from a srewed up future timeline where the Sentinels had killed off pretty much all of the X-Men.
It might seem an unlikely story for an X-Men First Class sequel however it has the potential to mix old and new X-casts in one movie. Just think about it, Kelsey Grammer's Beast meeting Nicholas Hoult's Beast, Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender on screen together as Magneto, or even just a world weary Wolverine battling mutant killing robots in the future! Dear lord it sounds amazing. The time travelling element (as well as the death of numerous characters) would allow some of the original trilogy cast to return whilst many could be easily written out.
Now let's just suggest that this storyline does take place and it effectively allows for a new X-Men timeline to exist, what could follow on from this? Or failing that what past X-Men stories could follow on from X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) for yet more X-Movies?!?!
Hmmm... well how about these Top 5 Potential X-Men Movies?!
Not the greatest of X-Men storylines but still worthy of big screen treatment if reworked correctly. House of M was an X-Men/Avengers crossover where mutant Avenger the Scarlet Witch altered reality so that mutants no-longer existed. A live-action adaptation would certainly take the X-Men movies off in a whole new direction and would create a new dilema for Professor X and Co. How do you deal with the disappearance of the mutant population?
During the 1980s the sewer-dwelling mutants known as the Morlocks were killed off by the evil Mauraders. Not only were many innocent mutants picked off in the violent assault but also the X-Man known as Angel had his wings broken and subsequently amputated. The storyline might not rank up there with the likes of Days of Future Past or the Phoenix Saga, but it could provide yet another reason for Magneto to get very angry about the violence that is directed at mutants.
Mutant Massacre could even be used as a story idea for a sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand in order to jump start tense relations between mutants and humans (yes even though the Mauraders are mutants themselves).
A major crossover event during the 1990s was X-Cutioner's Song, a 12-issue story which involved all of the major X-Men of the time. I'm talking Cable, Bishop, Wolverine, X-Force, X-Factor, both X-Men teams (Gold and Blue) and everyone else in between. The story centred upon chief bad guy Stryfe and his attempt to assasinate Professor Charles Xavier.
Once again X-Cutioner's Song would make for a great X-Movie (X-Men: First Class 3?) and would allow for an epic mutant vs mutant battle with Xavier's life hanging in the balance. The film would also lead into the creation of the Legacy Virus, the Marvel Universe's take on the AIDS epidemic.
OK so we all know that Professor Xavier and Magneto are frenemies, but what about having their strained relationship give birth (metaphorically speaking) to an evil combination of both characters? Well that's pretty much what happened with the Onslaught storyline which took place during the 1990s.
Following the events of X-Men: First Class (2011) what if Charles and Eric create a mutant being that makes the human population have further reason to fear mutants?
Charles spends his lifetime fighting for mutant rights, but what if part of this fight is because he makes the mutant-human situation worse? A guilt ridden Xavier makes for a very interesting Xavier!
Surely the mother of all X-Men 'events', the Age of Apocalypse was an alternate timeline which took place following (yet another) assasination attempt on Professor Charles Xavier's life. Although the story involved some time-travel-hoopla with Xavier's son, the movie adaptation could easily take place post-X-Men: The Last Stand.
With Xavier dead (well if you ignore the end credit sequence where his mind was transported to someone else's body) the Age of Apocalyspe could easily take place as X-Men 4. The world seems a safe place, mutants and humans live in peace together.... and then Apocalypse arrives to screw things up! A distopian future follows and perfectly dovetails into a Days of Future Past adaptation? Ohhhhh.... see what I did there?
