WHAT IS IT?
The Wizard is a 1980s kids movie starring Fred Savage, Christian Slater and a whole host of Nintendo games, including the first onscreen appearance of the NES game, Super Mario Bros 3!!!
The Wizard tells the story of young autistic boy called Jimmy who lives with his dad (Bridges) and half brothers Corey (Savage) and Nick (Slater). When Jimmy is placed into care he escapes - with the help of Corey - and heads off to LA to take part in a computer games contest.
GOOD IDEA/BAD IDEA:
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Where to even begin?
Look at the poster. Go on, have a look. There are kids having fun, there are a few explosions, there's a jet, there's even Super freakin' Mario; how could this movie not be fun?!
Jeez, it even had Fred Savage in it. Fred Savage!
The kid from the Wonder Years. The kid from The Princess Bride!!!! The Princess GOD DAMN Bride! That movie was awesome.
Not only that, but The Wizard promised to be a showcase (at the time) for some of Nintendo's biggest games and accessories, including the Power Glove and Super Mario Bros 3! Look how amazing the Power Glove looked. What kid wouldn't want one of these? And Super Mario Bros 3, appearing in a movie before it was even released in the US or Europe?!?
The only redeeming point of the movie (and seriously it's still not even worth giving it that much credit) was the fact that it tried to tell a story about a kid and his broken home. The inclusion of this element at least made....
...ah, forget it. The storyline was boring. Look at the kid. Look how bored he is and he was in the bloody film!!!!
Once again; what a croc of shit.
The story is... The Wizard wasn't as good as say, The Wizard of Oz.
That was a great movie.
A movie with an actual wizard in it.
A movie which was so good that it has stood the test of time and is regarded as a timeless classic.
The Wizard was instead...
...a steaming pile of poop.
A film about kids playing the games you want to play, but can't, because they are playing them.
What a croc of shit.
