Well there you have it; the ultimate line-up in the Ultimate Team-Up! By now (if you’ve actually read the past 16 top secret files) you’ll have seen who made it through the recruitment process to become a teammate in the Ultimate Team-Up. Each member brings something different to the mix and like the Dirty Dozen, the Avengers and S Club 7 they are (or at least will be) the best of the best of the very best! As you’ll appreciate many names were under consideration for the team, but with places limited only those deemed truly worthy made it through to the final list….
…So let’s see who got cut!
IN OR OUT?
First up Xena found herself pitted against vampire slayer Buffy and her former boyfriend Angel for her place on the team. All three had escaped death on more than one occasion, all three were fierce fighters and all three knew how to make the tough decisions when needed; but ultimately it was Xena that was recruited because there was only one space available and Buffy & Angel sort of come as a pair. You see, simple maths came into things. Angel did get a brief reprieve when the position of ‘Insurance’ was up for consideration, due to the fact that he would put the mission before anything else, but in the end there was only ever one person for the position and Jack Bauer was the man. As for the position of Runner, although Cheetara was always a strong contender she did face opposition from the DC Comics’ scarlet speedster, the Flash. In the end the fast-moving feline took the available position, in order to create a better mix in the group and after all she’s a cat, so statistically speaking she has more lives (even if the Flash has come back from the dead), so Cheetara should survive longer in the field. Xena, Bauer and Cheetara aisde, those weren’t the only positions almost taken by someone else. Arzon’s position was almost taken by Centurion Ace McCloud, Gooseman’s was almost taken by Robocop and Yoda’s role of Mentor was almost taken by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ sensei, Master Splinter. As for Lois Lane it was debatable whether or not she should be part of the team, mostly because she gets herself into a pickle on a regular basis, but just like Jack Bauer, Lois never lets anything go if she believes in it… and that’s the sort of attitude the team requires.
As for additions to the team, GI Joe legend Snake Eyes almost made it into the group as did Jonny Quest, Wonder Woman, the Beast and Dr Bruce Banner. The Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards was also a maybe, as was the Thing and the Bruce Wayne’s trusty butler Alfred Pennyworth, amongst a few others. In the end, after every candidate was considered only 16 were chosen and not one of them was Wolverine! Oh and as a little side point… only four of the 16 (that’s one quarter for all you maths fans out there) originated in comics; the other 12 came from the world of TV and literature! Well the team’s all good to go, so if you need them (and you can pay more than minimum wage), maybe you can hire… THE ULTIMATES!
