WHAT IS IT?
Superman Unbound is the 16th release in DC/Warner Bros Animated Original Movies series. The film is an adaptation of Geoff Johns' 2008 comic, Superman: Brainiac, and stars Matt Boomer in the title role, with John Noble as Brainiac.
Superman Unbound focuses on Brainiac's arrival on Earth and his subsequent showdown with Superman and Supergirl. During the course of the movie, Brainiac 'collects' Metropolis, by shrinking down the city and trapping it inside a bottle, just like he did with the Kryptonian city of Kandor.
Superman Unbound was released direct-to-DVD and Blu-ray in 2013, ahead of the release of big screen Superman movie, The Man of Steel (2013).
WHAT WAS GOOD?
Although a fairly straight forward tale - with a smaller scale voice cast than past DC animated movies - there was a heck of a lot to like about Superman Unbound. The animation was good, the design of Brainiac was quite menacing and there was enough action in the film to fill out its 70 minute running time.
Matt Bomer proved capable of bringing Superman to life, with able support from Stana Katic as Lois Lane, whilst Molly Quinn was good as Supergirl, despite not having a great deal to do. Highlights included the 'collection' of Kandor and Brainiac's (sort of) destruction when in contact with the bacteria and organisms on Earth. Good stuff!
WHAT WAS BAD?
Superman Unbound was good. It wasn't quite as good as say Superman: Doomsday (2007), but it was an enjoyable release. There's not much to bad mouth. Jeez, it could have been crap like All Star Superman (2011), so let's just be grateful it wasn't!!!
OK, Supergirl didn't get much to do in Superman Unbound, but hey ho, it was Superman's movie, not Kara's!
WHY PUSH THE BUTTON?
Why push the button indeed? Superman Unbound was a simple Superman story. Ok, it was given a 15 Certificate in the UK, despite the story being quite basic and therefore aimed at a younger demographic, but it was a good Superman movie.
Push the button if you want... but you're making a mistake.
