GOOD IDEA/BAD IDEA:
The first two Superman movies were great, but after the huge misfire that was Superman III (1983) and the lacklustre Supergirl (1984) film, the Superman series needed a solid story and a sharp focus to get things back on track. After a bit of negotiation Christopher Reeve agreed to return to the role of Clark Kent/Superman, Gene Hackman came back as Lex Luthor and even the supporting players were back on board, but unfortunately this didn’t make any difference to the story. This time around Superman tussled with lame villain Nuclear Man in what could only be described as a poor excuse for a film that belittled the legacy of the original movie. It didn’t help that everyone involved looked old and tired, numerous exterior shots were filmed in Milton Keynes, and Superman bizarrely had the ability to rebuild the Great Wall of China with his eyes! On top of this there were huge budget cuts, severe edits to the final film and numerous blinding errors which resulted in Superman IV sinking the franchise quicker than a Kryptonite turd.
