So the focus of this week's entry is Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin... the Iron Partriot... and the sick son of a bitch who keeps messing up Spider-man's life.
OH, I KNOW ABOUT NORMAN OSBORN, HE'S THE GREEN GOBLIN, RIGHT?
Yep you're right and that is something that we'll be looking at, however its Osborn himself who is our main focus on this occasion.
HMMM... IS OSBORN SUPERNATURAL?
Well it depends on how you look at it. Osborn has managed to cheat death on a number of occasions (most famously following his demise in Amazing Spider-man #122) and if that isn't supernatural then I don't know what is!?!
PERHAPS OSBORN IS A ZOMBIE?
Maybe in an alternative reality, but not in the Earth-616 universe (aka the regular Marvel Universe); on Earth-616, Osborn is a complete monster. Let me explain....
Norman Osborn was introduced into the pages of the Amazing Spider-man to provide a constant thorn in the side of everyone's favourite wall-crawler. During his early appearances, Osborn seemed nothing more than a background character of no real importance, but little did Spidey know that Osborn was scheming in the shadow's as the villainous Green Goblin.
Soon Gobby (Norman's affectionate nickname) learned Spider-man's secret identity and after terrorising the teen superhero with his dastardly schemes, a climactic showdown took place, resulting in the death of Spidey's true love Gwen Stacy.
The battle appeared to mark the end of Norman's reign of tyrany as the Green Goblin, however whilst Spider-man believed the Goblin had also met his demise, Norman was once again lurking in the shadows working on his next scheme.
JEEZ, HE LIKE'S MESSING ABOUT DOESN'T HE?
Yep. When Norman did reappear it was to reveal himself as the mastermind behind the clone saga (a really complex story involving countless copies of Spider-man). Not only that but he somehow managed to convince the world he was Earth's greatest hero, he took on the guise of the Iron Patriot and even led the (Dark) Avengers!
Yeah, he also screwed over his own son, Harry on many occasions. He's a bit of a douche like that.
SO WHEN YOU SAY THAT NORMAN'S A MONSTER YOU MEAN FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING?
A monster is defined as a hideous creature that can cause harm. The word monster is taken from the Latin word monstrum and for most people the word monster conjures up images of ghouls, demons and of course goblins. Norman took on the guise of a goblin, which brought his monstrous persona to the public forefront, however his truely hideous personality was hidden below the surface. The choices he made bore no relation to his appearance but rather to what was going on inside his head. In fact if you think about all of the monsters that you see in creature features those monsters are not often aware of their actions. Norman is.
