Following the first season of Marvel’s animated Silver Surfer series the plan was for a second run to pick up where season one left off.
OH. SO WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED?
If Silver Surfer had made it to a second season then there would have been an episode that saw ol’ chrome dome recreating the Universe which would have eventually resulted in him losing his precious love, Shalla Bal. The Surfer would have then become involved in the Kree-Skrull war and he would have eventually met the Fantastic Four.
BUT WHAT DID HAPPEN?
Whilst the first season of Silver Surfer aired to decent ratings, financial problems at Marvel meant that the company was on the verge of going bankrupt whilst the second season was in the planning stage. In total a further 8 episodes that were to form part of season two were scripted, but production never restarted and so Silver Surfer remained as a one season cartoon.
WAS THIS SUCH A BAD THING?
Silver Surfer has always been a cult character and given the fact that the 90s produced a couple of good Marvel cartoons (X-Men, Spider-man) it was a shame that Silver Surfer wasn’t given another chance. Jeez, the Fantastic Four cartoon got two seasons and that was bloody awful, so a second season of Silver Surfer should have been a no-brainer!
BUT WHAT IF?
If Silver Surfer had made it to a second season then it would have encouraged more children to take up surfing. This would have been a positive step forward in the fight against obesity... and that would have been a good thing. However all that interest in beach activities would have seen an increase in viewing figures for reruns of Baywatch, which would have then led to people wanting to revisit spinoff show Baywatch Nights! This would have then made it back onto TV screens and inevitably that would have caused someone to want to remake it... Hollywood style!
