WHAT IS IT?
Resident Evil (2002) is the first in a series of action-horror movies based on Capcom's extremely popular horror survival series of games. The film stars Milla Jovovich as Alice - a gun-wielding heroine who becomes the main protagonist of the entire series of films - alongside Michelle Rodriguez as Rain Ocampo and Eric Mabius as Matt Addison.
The film centres upon an outbreak of a virus capable of re-animating the dead and borrows elements from a number of Resident Evil games, including Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.
Resident Evil was released to mixed reviews - well mostly poor reviews if truth be told - but proved to be a hit with fans, making it a box office success.
GOOD IDEA/BAD IDEA:
Following a long list of piss-poor game-to-film adaptations (no really) there was little hope that Resident Evil was going to buck the trend, yet to everyone's surprise, it did! Casting the stunning Milla Jovovich as the lead was a stroke of genius - as she brought a hard, yet engaging edge to the role - but the real reason that the film succeeded was because it didn't feel as if it was based on a game!
Now, that's not to say that Resident Evil was an amazing movie, because boy it wasn't, but in comparison with most game adaptations it was entertaining and did have genuinely fun moments; in particular, a scene involving a laser beam and Colin Salmon's character James Shade.
Keeping the story fairly simple and relying heavily on a good old fashion bit of zombie-fear from the audience, Resident Evil told the story of the evil Umbrella Corporation and its attempts to cover up the outbreak of a deadly virus which raised the dead. Chief heroine Alice was thrust into this situation and along with a mixed bunch of commandos she did her best to uncover the Umbrella Corporation's terrible secret and survive to tell the tale.
Most of the movie worked, with some good set pieces used to liven up the story, however the inclusion of a CG 'Licker' towards the end of the movie was more than a little questionable.
Resident Evil was certainly not to everyone's taste, but it was enjoyable enough and could have been much, much worse. Still not seen it? Well why not grab yourself a couple beers - drinking responsibly of course - and some popcorn and watch it with your mates.
WHAT'S THE STORY?
Alice wakes up in a mansion with an annoying case of amnesia. Shortly afterwards she is taken into the Hive where she has to kick the ass of many, many zombies.
Alice is good at ass-kicking and manages to uncover the truth behind the outbreak of the Umbrella Corporation's T-Virus. She also manages to survive to the end of the movie, when most of her colleagues are bumped off.
Sadly for Alice she is knocked out and experimented on by the Umbrella Corporation. When Alice wakes up she is in Raccoon City, which has become a ghost town...
...creating a set up for the sequel.
Resident Evil was certainly
