Talia – “For years you’ve devoted yourself to this city.It has taken your youth, your strength and very nearly your life.No one has earned a second chance more than you.”
THE PROBLEM WITH...
...getting older is that younger people take on the roles once held during an older person’s former years.Sometimes it isn’t an issue as during the course of a lifetime situations and experiences change a person’s views and they no longer feel the way they once did.Unfortunately birthdays signal a fixed age, a milestone in that life and instead of looking back at the accumulation of experiences which have come with each passing year, it highlights the balance of how long is left.
For Bruce Wayne seeing Terry McGinnis as Batman everyday reminds him of who he once was, and also who he still is.Bruce never gave up the cowl willingly, but it was because he had to face up to the fact his body was no longer capable of being Batman that he reluctantly found a successor. During Out Of The Past Bruce Wayne celebrated a birthday and as he reminisced over former loves, Talia Al Ghul entered the Batcave to wish him many happy returns. It had been many years since they last met, but thanks to her father’s Lazarus pit she had remained youthful. With Talia’s reappearance (and looking so youthful) it caused a sudden rush of realisation for Bruce of who he once was and would never be again. She then offered to do the same for him, by turning back the years and Bruce had to consider what he really wanted.
It wasn't vanity for Bruce however, but the sense that he would struggle to keep his mission statement if he was no longer physically able to do so.Giving him a few years back Talia renewed a confidence in him but when he realised how easy it would be to take a second chance at life, he resisted.Age maybe a cruel tormentor, constantly a reminder that everything changes no matter how hard the resistance to it is, but it doesn’t change who that person is inside.Bruce couldn’t take the easier life because he would have been going against everything he had previously strived for.No matter how many wrinkles, or how much longer it took to stand up, Bruce’s character remained the same, keeping him stronger for his remaining years. He may have been facing a shorter path than the one he'd previously taken, but it was part of his journey and he owed it to himself to see it through.
VINTAGE VIEWS: *Whilst Bruce was in the Batcave reminiscing about his former lovers he looked at pictures of Zatanna, Lois Lane, Selina Kyle and Barbara Gordon, but not Andrea Beaumont, the woman he was engaged to in Mask of the Phantasm (1993).
*The episode kicked off with a hilarious Batman musical and featured actors playing the parts of Batman, Robin, Commissioner Gordon, Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn on stage.Bruce was less than impressed.
*DC Animated regulars Mark Hamill, Michael Rosenbaum and Adrienne Barbeau provided voices for Out of the Past, but not for characters they were usually associated with.
*The traditional Batman theme from Batman: TAS could be heard when Bruce and Terry teamed up to tackle Talia’s henchmen.
