Cats are survivors. Fact! They may have nine lives and always land on their feet, but that’s because cats can generally cope with anything and the same goes for Thundercats! Being the lord of the Thundercats, Lion-O not only managed to fight off the constant threat of Joan Riv… erm… Mumm-Ra, The Ever Living, but he also managed to lead his fellow felines from one comic-book series to another, all without clawing the furniture. Originally published in Star Comics (an imprint of Marvel), Lion-O’s adventures were cut short in the US, but in the UK, Marvel kept Thundercats on shelves for three more years and if anyone was getting a pat on the back for it then it was Lion-O.
The leader of the Thundercats was the poster boy for the franchise and with his manly good looks and his ability to thrust the Sword of Omens back and forth at a moment’s notice it wasn’t surprising that he quickly became one of our Pulp Idols. His popularity may have faded over the years, but he kept on going like a trooper during the lean times and eventually he was rewarded with another series for his fellow Thundercats, through the pages of Wildstorm books.
