After the Silver Surfer’s big break in Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer (2007) the character was set to get a solo spin-off movie, with a screenplay from sci-fi fan-favourite (and spellchecker nightmare) J. Michael Strczynski.
OH. SO WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED?
Following the events of Rise of The Silver Surfer, JMS’s screenplay had chrome dome return to his home world, Zenn-La, worried that greedy guts Galactus, the planet devouring monstrosity, would exact revenge over his former herald’s betrayal.Doug Jones who played Surfer in the FF sequel had signed for two more Fantastic Four movies with movie studio Fox and with the Silver Surfer spin-off seen as a higher priority than FF3, it was likely he would have reprised the role.It was also established in the screenplay that Galactus would have looked more like his comic counterpart than he did in the FF sequel...where he was a cloud.A friggin’ cloud!
BUT WHAT DID HAPPEN?
As Rise of The Silver Surfer proved less successful at the box-office than Fantastic Four (2005), Fox decided to put the Silver Surfer movie on hold whilst the studio decided the FF’s next move.
WAS THIS SUCH A BAD THING?
No not really, because as cool as the Silver Surfer is, he actually works a lot better as a supporting character than a solo star and with the FF movies being a bit pants, he wouldn’t have been starting off on firm foundations. Also Fox’s Elektra (2005) and X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) demonstrated that spin-offs were not all that great and so he was better off holding fire for a while.
BUT WHAT IF?
If JMS’s screenplay had been the basis for a FF spin-off then Galactus would have no longer been a cloud... NO LONGER A CLOUD, GOD DAMN IT!This would have instantly been seen as a wondrous thing by all fan-boys, but it would have given them even more ammunition to knock Galactus’ appearance in the FF sequel. This would have led to numerous Facebook groups being set up to diss (that’s ‘disrespecting’ for all the non-street readers of The Comics Code) Galactus’ first appearance on screen. With short-sighted and over-protective parents unsure what a Galactus was, they would have presumed there was some kind of cyber bullying going on and they would have set up a campaign entitled ‘Stamp Out Bullying’.They would have then formed large mob-like groups chanting S.O.B...S.O.B... which would have been deemed offensive by other members of society and a riots would have broken out in the streets. These riots would have quickly escalated into a war!
