During the mid 2000s Warner Bros was gearing up a live-action Green Lantern movie and the studio wanted funny man Jack Black to star as the wing wielding superhero.
OH. SO WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED?
Black was approached to star in what was to be a comedy written by Saturday Night Live writer Robert Smigel. The School Of Rock actor would have played artist turned Green Lantern Kyle Rayner (and not Hal Jordon as played by Ryan Reynolds in Green Lantern (2011)), in what would have been a movie played for laughs!
BUT WHAT DID HAPPEN?
Black was initially interested, but admitted in interviews that there wasn’t really a workable script and despite early talks nothing was signed to keep him attached to the project. The news of Black’s involvement quickly hit the internet where early feedback from fans suggested that a comedy Green Lantern movie would have been a stupid idea (by that point Black himself thought the same too)!!!! Green Lantern went back to Development Hell for a few more years before Ryan Reynolds was eventually cast in Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern.
WAS THIS SUCH A BAD THING?
Are you serious? Just think about it for a second... Jack Black as Green Lantern! Casting Black as Kyle Rayner, Hal Jordan or any other Green Lantern (except maybe Kilowog) would have been a disaster due to the simple fact that Jack Black is in no way like any of them! The film would have been played for laughs and instead of Warner Bros/DC introducing cinema goers to a hero that could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Batman and Superman they would have instead demonstrated a slapstick creation on par with Aquaman! It would have been a box-office disaster, the likes of which Green Lantern would have forever struggled to rise above.
BUT WHAT IF?
If Jack Black had starred as Green Lantern then he would have no doubt played a dropout stoner who didn’t play by the rules until he was forced to grow up and become a responsible member of society. Audiences watching would have identified with Black’s stoner character but would have missed his character’s subtle journey of responsibility amongst all the slapstick and fart gags and soon they too would have become stoners. Rapidly a generation of stoners would have existed and many people would have lived their lives sat around their kitchen tables getting high and only venturing out when they had the munchies to visit all night garages. These garages would have soon become very profitable and the sales of microwavable snacks would have gone through the roof. Quickly following this, food manufacturers would have stopped producing anything unless it could be heated for 2 minutes in a microwave and vegetables would have become obsolete. Without the recommended intake of five fruit or veg a day the human race would have become fat.
