WHAT IS IT?
It's the camp classic Flash Gordon movie starring Ye-English-Shouty-Actor Brian Blessed... oh and a few other actors you may have heard of.
Released in 1980 Flash Gordon flopped at the box-office, taking less than it cost to make, but has since become a cult favourite in the UK that crops up on Saturday afternoons, Bank Holiday Monday's and whenever ITV need something to fill up its TV schedule. Sam J. Jones took the title as Flash Gordon, a football star who was tasked with saving Earth from the evil Ming the Merciless and he was supported by the likes of Timothy Dalton, Topol and of course Brian Blessed!
The film also featured a bitchin' soundtrack by legendary rockers Queen, which included the title tune Flash (a-ha!) and had more sci-fi imagery than the dreams of George Lucas (possibly).
WHAT WAS GOOD?
Brian Blessed (particularly his catchphrase 'Gordon's alive?')... The soundtrack by Queen... The sheer fun-tastic, bombastic, cornucopia of colours on screen...
Oh... just about everything else in the movie!
Flash Gordon was just brilliant!
WHAT WAS BAD?
The reason Flash Gordon flopped at the box-office was because it was a bit too camp for its own good and at times seemed as daft as....
.....Nah, screw it, Flash Gordon was fantastic!!
WHY PUSH THE BUTTON?
Pushing the button on Flash Gordon would erase it from existence and please all of those non-Flash fans out there who think that it is nothing more than a cheap piece of movie fluff that should never have been allowed to exist in the first place. However on the flipside, erasing Flash Gordon would create a huge gap in ITV's schedules (and the schedules of a number of other TV stations around the world) and it would take a piece of fun away from the universe.
