If you don’t know Tracy, then you don’t know Dick! We here at The Comics Code (or TCC if you prefer) are all about Dick and that’s because he’s one of the most successful detectives in the history of comics. Batman might be the world’s greatest detective, but with his super hero life keeping him occupied he’s often too busy fighting alien despots and crazed clowns to have time to fill in all that necessary paperwork that a true detective must sort out. He also doesn’t look so good in a yellow trench coat and matching hat. For this alone Dick is a Pulp Idol, but what really sets him apart is that when Chester Gould created him in 1931 he couldn’t have imagined how enduring his character would be.
Since making his debut appearance (in the pages of the Detroit Mirror), Dick has cropped up on the radio, in serials, cartoons, a TV show and even a film (alongside Madonna no less)... which isn’t bad for a policeman with no superpowers! Still think you don’t know Tracy? Well maybe you know a bit more about Dick than you did before.
