Following the Warren Beatty starring Dick Tracy (1990) the hope from Beatty was that Disney would produce sequel as part of an ongoing series of movies.
OH.SO WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED?
Beatty would have returned to play everyone’s favourite Dick and the actor claimed he had a very good idea for a sequel.... He just never told anyone what that idea was.
BUT WHAT DID HAPPEN?
A HUGE lawsuit ensued over the rights to the Dick Tracy property between the actor, the producers and Tribune Media Services who had optioned the rights to Beatty back in 1985.Disney had already decided that following the disappointing box-office gross it didn’t want to make a sequel and eventually gave almost all of its share in the property back to Beatty in 2005.To confuse matters more Tribune Media Services started to develop a Dick Tracy TV series which went down like a cup of cold sick with Beatty.Eventually everything got so complicated and drawn out that a sequel never materialised.
WAS THIS SUCH A BAD THING?
Probably not.Dick Tracy was an interesting but flawed movie that never quite sat right with movie audiences.A sequel probably wouldn’t have been the best way forward at the time and as time moved on the likelihood was that there just wasn’t an audience for it anymore.
BUT WHAT IF?
Well if Warren Beatty had made Dick Tracy 2 then he would have needed another pop star to take on the femme fatale role played in the original movie by Madonna. With the sequel initially being eyed to be released in the early 90s it could have easily been ‘Doin’ The Doo’ star Betty Boo aka Alison Moira Clarkson.Betty, or Alison as she may have preferred, would have then gone on to have a series of hit records, a string of high-profile romances and a questionable period in her life where she controversially adopted children from foreign countries. She would also have appeared in a Bond film and sang the theme tune...which may not have been wise.
