CAPTAIN AMERICA IN
THE INCREDIBLE HULK (2008)

WHAT WAS THE PLAN?

Picture
With Iron Man (2008) and The Incredible Hulk(2008) kick-starting the shared Marvel Movie Universe the plan was for fellow Avenger Captain America to cameo in The Incredible Hulk movie during the opening scene.

OH.  SO WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED?

The original plan was for the Incredible Hulk to open with a scene set in the Arctic.  The scene would have followed Bruce Banner, as played by Edward Norton, as he travelled as far away from civilisation as possible in order to commit suicide.  As the scene played out Banner would have pulled out a gun to end his own life, only to transform into his alter-ego the Hulk at the pivotal moment.

With the Hulk in control the creature would have crushed the gun in the palm of his hand, with the resulting noise creating an avalanche.  It would have been at this point when the sliding ice would have lifted up the frozen body of Captain America, who had been incased in the Arctic since the 1940s.  The scene would have acted as a teaser for fans, who were aware of Cap's back story and would have been looking for hidden 'Easter eggs' within the connected movie universe.

BUT WHAT DID HAPPEN?

Director Louis Leterrier told fans to expect a Captain America cameo in the then forthcoming release of the movie, however prior to the film's debut a few last minute changes were made.
Marvel Studios felt that the suicide opening was too dark a sequence to open The Incredible Hulk and the entire scene was cut from the theatrical release.  The scene later resurfaced as a deleted scene on the DVD release, however the novelisation of the film kept the scene intact and it formed the opening prologue of the book, albeit without any reference to Cap.

WAS THIS SUCH A BAD THING?

Putting aside the appearance of Captain America for just a moment, the planned opening sequence explained so much about Banner's desperate situation as well as his struggle with the Hulk, that it was a shame that it wasn't included in the final cut of the film.  As for Cap's appearance, well it was questionable to say the least!  The character's inclusion was designed to be a 'blink and you'll miss him' nod for dedicated fans and it was definately that!  You could watch that scene thirty times (and trust us, we did) and see nothing more than ice and shadows.  Many would even argue that Cap isn't even in the scene and it was nothing more than wishful thinking on the part of fans.

BUT WHAT IF?

If the Arctic scene had remained in the release of The Incredible Hulk then audiences would have flocked to cinemas to see Captain America.  Upon realising that the chances of seeing him were practically zero, they would have lost faith in director Louis Leterrier, the movie industry and they would have even lost faith in humanity.

The future would be a very bleak place.
