To reignite the Batman and Superman franchises, after Batman & Robin (1997) bombed at the box-office and a potential Superman film couldn’t seem to get off the ground, Warner Bros toyed with the idea of a Batman Vs. Superman movie.
OH.SO WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED?
Batman and Superman would have come to blows, sorted out their differences and then teamed-up to fight Lex Luthor.Along the way Batman would have had to deal with depression and the death of his friends (Robin, Alfred and Jim Gordon) and Superman and Lois Lane would have gotten divorced!Wolfgang Peterson was to direct and Josh Hartnett and Christian Bale were in the frame for Superman and Batman respectively; although they both reportedly turned down the roles.
BUT WHAT DID HAPPEN?
Warner’s were keen to push forward and green-lit the project, but then Peterson dropped out in favour of directing Troy (2004) and so Batman Vs. Superman stalled.Warner’s then decided that a team-up movie wasn't the best way forward for the characters and instead decided to go back down the solo route to get their heroes back on screens. Although Batman Vs. Superman didn't materialise, a few years later in the Warner Bros movie I Am Legend (2007) a poster could be seen in the background of a scene, featuring the combination of the Batman and Superman logos, suggesting that the movie was still on Warner Bros radar.
WAS THIS SUCH A GOOD THING?
Ultimately yes as it paved the way for Batman Begins (2005) which kick-started Batman’s career.... although it didn’t help Superman as his own solo movie Superman Returns (2006) didn’t do so well.
BUT WHAT IF?
If Batman Vs Superman had made it, then it would have possibly sat alongside such classics as... Freddie Vs Jason (2003) and Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem (2007).
Nothing more needs to be said.
