WHAT IS IT?
It's the 1989 live-action Batman movie starring Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader and Jack Nicholson as his arch nemesis the Joker! The film was the first movie in Warner Bros 'modern' Batman film franchise (now refered to as the Batman Anthology) and was set during the early days of Batman's career. The story centred around Batman's emergence in Gotham City and his subsequent battles with the Joker. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $400 million dollars on its release and making an additional $750 million in merchandise that same year.
WHAT WAS GOOD?
There was much to love about 1989's Batman movie, not only because it presented a non-campy take on the superhero, but because it was so damn cool!
Firstly the casting was pretty much spot-on, especially when it came to the leading roles. Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne was nuts, as was Jack Nicholson's Joker, and the combination of the two was enough to cover the cracks in the script. Michael Gough provided perfect back up as Batman's trusty butler Alfred and the likes of Pat Hingle, Jack Palance and Robert Whul rounded out Gotham's cast of characters.
Next up, Gotham itself was a truly grim and gothic place that not only complimented the action it also helped to sell the idea of a man dressed up as a bat trying to fight crime!
Finally - and highlighted by the Joker - Batman had such wonderful toys, including the sleek Batmobile, an array of gadgets, a nifty costume and the bloomin' Batwing!
Now let's enjoy the spoils of this movie with a selection of images from Batman!
WHAT WAS BAD?
Despite all of the movie's good points, Batman did have a few flaws, most notably in the script. When the film was being shot a number of rewrites took place including the film's climax which meant that director Tim Burton didn't have the tightest script to work from and this showed up from time to time.
Another weak point was Batman's love interest Vicki Vale, who didn't offer much to the story and her only real contribution to the film was to look pretty. Jeez, just look at the image to your right, even Batman looks unimpressed with her and he was bonkin' her between fights with the Joker!
