WHAT IS IT?
All Star Superman is the 10th release in DC's Animated Original (direct-to-DVD) Movies line. The film is based on Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's Superman comic of the same name, which focuses on the final days of Superman following a fatal exposure to solar radiation.
All Star Superman stars former Desperate Housewives star James Denton as the Man of Steel, whilst Christina Hendricks provides vocal duties for Lois Lane and Anthony LaPaglia portrays Lex Luthor. The animated movie sees Superman reveal his secret identity to Lois, as part of his plans to settle his affairs on Earth before his subsequent death.
All Star Superman was released on both DVD and Blu-ray in 2011 and took more than $4 million in sales.
WHAT WAS GOOD?
The animation in All Star Superman was great, showcasing character designs influenced by Frank Quitely's original drawings. The voice work, although not amazing, was also on the whole quite good, with Denton providing suitable vocal duties for this particular take on the Man of Steel.
Oh and Lex Luthor was great, the Parasite was creepy....
...sadly that was about it.
WHAT WAS BAD?
Erm, the script? The BIG PROBLEM with All Star Superman was that the story was all over the place!!! The overall narrative centred around Superman's final days on Earth and his relationship with Lois, but sadly along the way there were too many plot points which made little sense and didn't really go anywhere.
The introduction of characters Samson and Atlas.... the emergence of Kryptonian astronauts Bar-El and Lilo... Lois' paranoia... were all plot points which did nothing to enhance the story. In fact, All Star Superman would have benefitted greatly from a re-write before being filmed, which would have streamlined out the divergences that ultimately made it such a confusing mess.
Fans of the original comic may have found lots to enjoy in this animated offering, but anyone new to the material would have been lost - and probably would have switched off - within the first ten minutes.
WHY PUSH THE BUTTON?
All Star Superman was a missed opportunity and a big fat mess of a film. There are moments of fun and it had heaps of potential, but there are much better animated offerings from Superman... so go seek one out!
Push the button, erase All Star Superman from existence and move on with your life. You know it makes sense.
