Philip - “Ok Gomez, no use beating a dead horse.”
WHAT IS IT? It’s the third movie in the 90s Addams Family series based on the comic-strip characters created by Charles Addams, only it doesn’t have any of the cast from the first two successful films.
GOOD IDEA/BAD IDEA: Both Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993) had made it clear there was much after-life left in the Addams Family series, meaning a third film would be inevitable .Sadly replacing the director, the cast and lowering the budget also meant removing everything that made the first two worth watching.
WHAT’S THE STORY?
Tim Curry is embarrassed, and he should be.Daryl Hannah is also embarrassed, and she should be too. They both have agreed to appear in an Addams Family movie and have forgotten to read the script.Thumbing through it on the way to the studio they realise that instead of signing up for an exciting entry into a popular franchise, they have agreed to appear in a movie so bad it screams straight to VHS.
They get into costume and rush to find Christopher Lloyd, who played Uncle Fester in the previous movies, in the hopes he will know what to do, but when they discover he has been replaced by a much cheaper actor, they call a meeting. The cast put their heads together and make a pact, agreeing that if they film everything quickly, they can go home very soon and chances are no one will ever see this anyway.
Gomez (Curry)and Morticia (Hannah) read the title of the script and decide an Addams family reunion must be where the story is going, so call up the grandparents to tag along. They arrive but seem to have developed Waltzhiemers, a whacky and comical version of alzhiemers, which makes it somehow acceptable to laugh at such a dreadful affliction. As such the Adams clan set off in search of other family members who might have some knowledge of how to treat the disease, as they have no idea, and every action the grandparents make seems to make light of WHAT IS A REALLY BAD ILLNESS!
Thanks to a mix-up over the spelling of their surname the family end up at a fancy hotel where another family called Adams are having a reunion and oh there is also a sub-plot about an inheritance. The situation is so mundane that Gomez is struggling to decide what accent he has, and ends up using a few different ones whilst competing against Philip Adams (Begley Jr) in a series of sporting challenges. As this is going on, Fester (Thomas), Pugsley (Messing), Wednesday (Fugere), Thing (Hand) and Lurch (Struycken) dither about to fill in the running-time and make a variety of unfunny jokes that are so criminal the police arrive and arrest Gomez and Morticia.
This doesn’t improve matters at all and once they get out of prison they abandon the storyline involving the Grandparents and return home where nothing happens and Morticia doesn’t speak French. With the film in the can, Curry and Hannah run as far away from the set as fast as humanly possible, and vow never to appear in an Addams Family movie ever again.
ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES: *Carel Struycken who plays Lurch, reprises the role he played in the previous two entries. It can only be presumed he hadn’t read the script either.
*Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci are fine actors associated with the first two Addams Family movies, and so naturally are not associated with this movie. Ok so Raul Julia was dead at the time, so he had an excuse anyway.
*A fourth Addams Family film never appeared after this one...strange that.A television series did however make an appearance, but didn’t star Tim Curry or Daryl Hannah...which is also strange.
